Major duties of this position include but are not limited to:
Conducts personal equipment inspections of subordinates to ensure the safety of the officers is not jeopardized by defective equipment, i.e. body armor, radio, duty weapon, etc. Observes, evaluates and prepares reports on the work performance of assigned personnel. Serve as subject-matter expert for all supervisory/law enforcement issues occurring during assigned shift. Reviews police investigative reports for accuracy and completeness and has the officers make corrections when necessary Directs department in the absence of the Chief and Deputy Chief during natural disasters, major accidents/incidents. Develops duty schedules, plans and directs shift operations, sets and adjusts short-term priorities, assigns patrol and special duties to Officers/Dispatchers. Approve and/or disapprove annual/sick leave. Reviews Daily Operations Journal and all other related paperwork for completeness and accuracy. Conducts or directs equipment inventories during shift change and ensures there is an adequate amount of supplies and forms present to perform prescribed duties. Adjusts patrol coverage and duty assignments to mitigate the effects of unexpected events. Observes, evaluates and prepares reports on the work performance of assigned personnel. Reviews disciplinary cases and recommends appropriate actions to the Chief and Deputy Chief. Conduct patrol briefings for police officers and dispatchers and make post assignments in accordance with established policies. Work Schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-08 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note:

Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-07) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
1) Pursuing and/or apprehending persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest; 2) Subduing individuals causing disturbances; 3) Arresting violators based on eyewitness accounts; 4) Performing criminal investigative, first responder, physical security, and correctional duties; 5) Performing control desk duties; 6) Experience leading/supervising officers and providing guidance in a law enforcement setting; 7) Experience that provided a knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, and practices. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE OFFICER POSITIONS:
Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm and weapons qualification/certification. New VA Police Officers are required to attend and pass an 10-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. A character investigation will be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. VA Police Officers are required to pass an annual medical examination. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. Applicants and employees must possess emotional and mental stability. VA Police Officers are required to take and pass a psychological examination. This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. The incumbent must meet the standards prescribed in the Lautenberg Amendment (PL 104-208) to the Gun Control Act of 1968 (18 USC922). Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess firearms or ammunition (Title 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(91)). Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have or have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by the candidate is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (Title 18 U.S.C. 1001). Physical Requirements:
The incumbent must be physically fit and agile in order to perform foot patrol and pursue persons on foot over/around rough and/or slippery terrain or obstacles, up and down stairs. Must successfully complete annual agility testing, provided by an Employee Health Physician, in order to retain position. The Officer is to respond to situations involving physical attack against themselves or others by dangerous/armed individuals. The Officer is to respond to medical emergencies and carry heavy equipment, carrying/restraining patients who may be unconscious/aggressive, out-of-control persons under drugs or alcohol influence, or other individuals threatening or capable of inflicting severe bodily harm. He/she is required to have the physical ability to control and maintain a safe and secure environment for the patients, visitors, and employees of the facility. The incumbent must be able of lifting heavy objects, carrying or moving heavy or unwieldy objects, crouching, crawling, and kneeling during pursuit or search, and detaining suspects or defending oneself or others against attack. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
